The Environmental Protection Department – Pollution Prevention and Remediation Division of Broward County in Florida recently honored Industrial Environmental Coatings Corp. DBA Enviroline Group with the Emerald Award for its efforts in preventing pollution at its manufacturing facility in Pompano Beach, FL. This award is the culmination of an extensive evaluation and inspection process and recognizes the company’s “ongoing compliance with environmental regulations and the implementation of programs and/or techniques that protect and preserve our environment over and above statutory requirements.”

The Emerald Award Program is designed to recognize businesses, government, individuals, or organizations in Broward County that demonstrate a commitment to protect and preserve the environment. The Award’s Pollution Prevention/Hazardous Waste Reduction category recognizes entities that excel in the reduction or elimination of pollution or waste while increasing the efficient and sustainable use of resources at the source (source reduction).

The Department evaluated the many ways Enviroline prevents pollution and minimizes waste, in particular its combination of source reduction and recycling. Source reduction employs methods that eliminate or minimize the amount of waste(s) generated either through manufacturing and process modifications or raw material substitutions. For the wastes generated after all possible source reduction methods have been applied, recycling and reuse options are considered to prevent the waste stream from entering the environment.

As a manufacturer of ultra high solids epoxy coatings, Enviroline uses little to no solvents in its manufacturing process, resulting in low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the environment. Additionally, Joseph Petruzzelli, Enviroline’s plant manager, has instituted numerous safety standards and spill prevention measures throughout his 35 years with the company, making Enviroline’s “no accidents” policy a reality. The company creates little waste in its manufacturing process owing to its shrewd business and manufacturing practices, thereby ensuring that very little recycling is necessary. Additionally, the inspectors were impressed with the cleanliness of the facility, and the environmental awareness of its employees.
