AmCoat Image 1.jpgBeautiful, historic homes are most-often found in historic districts near city centers. This mission of these historic districts is to preserve homes that sometimes were standing at the city’s founding. But older historic homes can be hard to maintain, and there are many other challenges those homeowners face.

Owners of these homes are finding that they can break the painting cycle of every five to seven years by applying Rhino Shield. And there are other benefits to applying the coating that goes on 8-10 times thicker than conventional paint.

“If you have a historic home, and want to protect and preserve it in the best way possible, you have to start with thorough prep work,” said AmCoat’s Director of Products and Applications Mike Moore. “And of course, follow that with Rhino Shield’s SPC primer and topcoat. Then you have a system that will last for decades.”

Rhino Shield recommends removing any paint older than 60 years. “You really want a pro to be doing this, if you want a lasting solution,” said Moore. “A lot of older paint has lost its utility, so it really should be removed — and you need someone certified in removing lead-based paints. Starting with a blank slate ensures the best possible protection.”

If older paint cannot be removed — under the right circumstances — Rhino Shield can encapsulate it, sealing it with its elastomeric ceramic formula.

Another challenge with older homes is that they traditionally do not have good insulation — they were built before fiberglass wall insulation and vapor barriers. This adds two issues that Rhino Shield coatings can address — heating and cooling costs and noise levels.

“This is where Rhino Shield shines,” said Moore. “Historic homes often lack wall insulation, making them susceptible to energy loss as well as noise penetration. Rhino Shield is a thick coating primarily designed to protect the substrate, but offers other great benefits that include energy savings and noise dampening.”

Other features of Rhino Shield include bio-resistance to combat the growth of mildew, algae and fungus as well as wide variety of colors.

“Many people don’t know this, but Victorian-style homes typically featured several different colors on one home,” said Moore. “Rhino Shield has actually developed a color chart that includes many Victorian color schemes so that homeowners can replicate the original colors their homes were coated with.”

Veteran-Owned and made in the U.S.A., Rhino Shield’s elastomeric-ceramic coating goes on 8-10 times thicker than conventional paint and includes a long-term product warranty.
