Ascend Performance Materials announced the start of high-purity acrylonitrile production at its Chocolate Bayou plant in Alvin, Texas. The milestone follows the installation and commissioning of new purification equipment.
“We're excited to provide our high-purity acrylonitrile into new end-markets and support technologies that drive innovation and sustainability,” said Alex Mihut, vice president of performance chemicals at Ascend. “This advancement not only strengthens our product portfolio but also reinforces our commitment to delivering essential materials that meet the evolving needs of our customers and the industry.”
Acrylonitrile is a key feedstock for various polymers and synthetic rubbers. The high-purity grade produced at the site supports applications in aerospace, renewable energy, and healthcare. According to the company, the project was partially funded through a U.S. government contract to secure domestic supply of nitrile rubber glove materials.
Ascend also plans to expand its Chocolate Bayou capabilities to include acetonitrile production, a solvent primarily used in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
