AkzoNobel announced a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Nordic solar developer Alight to support the construction of a 15 MWp solar park in Uppsala, Sweden. Alight will finance, build, and operate the facility, which is expected to produce 16 GWh annually—enough to power roughly 3,200 households.
Under the agreement, AkzoNobel will source a portion of the generated electricity at a fixed, low price to power its adhesives site in Kristinehamn and protective coatings plant in Gothenburg. The agreement supports the company’s target of reaching 100% renewable electricity by 2030.
“We already operate on 100% renewable electricity at all our manufacturing locations in Europe, and teaming up with Alight will secure clean, reliable energy for most of our operations in Sweden,” said Wijnand Bruinsma, director of sustainability at AkzoNobel.
The agreement also adds renewable energy capacity to the Swedish grid and contributes to AkzoNobel’s goal of halving its carbon footprint by 2030. The company is also exploring additional PPA opportunities in Malmö and Germany.
