Jotun announced a commercial agreement with BW LPG to supply Hull Performance Solutions (HPS) across 38 vessels from 2025 through 2028. The contract builds on Jotun’s existing work with BW LPG, where 17 vessels have already shown measurable improvements in fuel efficiency and emissions performance using HPS. The agreement was signed June 3, 2025, during Nor-Shipping in Norway.

BW LPG, the world’s largest owner and operator of LPG carriers, selected Jotun’s SeaQuantum X200 following a competitive evaluation process. According to Ricardo Ackermann, head of procurement at BW LPG, the company weighed factors including ESG criteria, delivery time, fuel savings and logistics. Jotun’s record of minimal hull cleaning needs and performance during dry dockings influenced the decision.

HPS has been deployed on BW LPG vessels since 2020, with the first vessel, BW Aries, demonstrating just 0.04% speed loss over a 56-month period, far outperforming the guaranteed 1.5%. The program incorporates ISO 19030-2-compliant performance monitoring and underwater inspections. The company reports typical fuel and emissions savings of 3–5% when HPS is combined with voyage optimization.

The expanded agreement includes access to Jotun’s HullKeeper platform, which uses proprietary fouling risk algorithms to notify operators when inspections are recommended. BW LPG’s head of technical, Knut-Helge Knutsen, noted that Jotun’s coatings align with the company’s sustainability strategy and long-term efficiency goals.

BW LPG is pursuing IMO-aligned decarbonization goals through measures such as retrofitting LPG carriers with dual-fuel engines and exploring ammonia-fueled technologies. Optimizing hull performance is part of the company’s near-term strategy to improve efficiency and comply with regulatory requirements.

Jotun’s HPS offering includes antifouling coatings, performance guarantees, and digital monitoring tools. “We are humbled by the responsibility to deliver HPS to 38 ships,” said Elaine Tam, general sales manager, marine and protective, at Jotun Malaysia and Singapore.
