Revitalizing the Grand Canyon West Skywalk

By Tnemec Inc.
September 8, 2025

In June 2023, a daring and awe-inspiring project unfolded at the Grand Canyon West Skywalk, where Tnemec, in collaboration with Abseilon and Fine Point Finishes, undertook the task of painting the steel structure that stands 4,000 feet above the canyon floor. This article unveils the engineering marvels and meticulous processes involved in preserving the beauty and integrity of this iconic attraction.

The Ingenious Platform

A pivotal element in this ambitious project was the creation of a specialized platform, suitably named a “stage,” designed by Abseilon. This innovative stage, equipped with wheels that rolled seamlessly on gusset rails attached to the Skywalk, served as a mobile workspace. It allowed the painters from Fine Point Finishes to navigate the entire structure efficiently and safely, ensuring no spot was left untouched.

The Coating Process

The success of this recoating venture hinged on a precise and thorough coating process. The project began with a chemical wash to remove sheen and loose dirt from the steel surface — an essential first step to ensure proper adhesion of subsequent layers.

The Backbone of Protection

Next, painters performed mechanical abrasion using sandpaper to strip away the existing coating. This prepared the surface for the application of a high-performance primer, Series 135 Chembuild, formulated to bond effectively to aged coatings and enhance corrosion resistance.

The primer served as a foundational layer that promoted adhesion and contributed to the overall durability of the system. Designed for performance in demanding environments, the product helped safeguard the Skywalk’s steel structure from degradation caused by exposure to weather and moisture.

Unparalleled Protection and Aesthetics

To complete the system, a fluoropolymer topcoat, Series 1072 Fluoronar, was applied. This coating added protection against UV rays, abrasion and chemical exposure while also maintaining the visual appeal of the structure. Its weather-resistant formulation supports long-term performance in the extreme conditions of the Grand Canyon.

A High-Flying Achievement

What makes this project truly extraordinary is that the entire recoating process occurred while the Grand Canyon West Skywalk remained open to the public. The skilled team from Fine Point Finishes worked diligently 4,000 feet above the canyon floor, showcasing not only their technical prowess but also their commitment to minimizing disruption to the attraction.

Where Majesty Meets Innovation

As a visitor to the Grand Canyon Skywalk, the experience is nothing short of breathtaking. Stepping onto the glass walkway, suspended thousands of feet above the canyon floor, provides a unique perspective of the awe-inspiring landscape. The recent recoating efforts by Tnemec, Abseilon and Fine Point Finishes ensure that this experience is not only visually stunning but also safe and structurally sound.

N-Butylpyrrolidone (NBP) as a Green Solvent to Replace N-Methylpyrrolidone (NMP) in Industrial Coating Applications

ON DEMAND: EPA published a regulation proposal around N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) in June 2024 to ban or limit NMP in many applications, such as paints and coatings and their removers. N-butylpyrrolidone (NBP) is a powerful and versatile solvent for a variety of industries looking for alternatives to substance of very high concern (SVHC)-listed solvents.
