Arkema announced a strategic partnership with Catalyxx to accelerate the development of low-carbon, bio-based acrylic monomers and resins. The collaboration will combine Arkema’s expertise in specialty materials with Catalyxx’s proprietary bio-alcohol technology to create a new value chain for sustainable acrylics.
Catalyxx plans to build an industrial facility to produce bio-alcohols, including bio n-butanol, derived from bioethanol using its patented process. The technology, validated at a demonstration plant in Seville, Spain, significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to fossil-based alternatives.
Arkema is evaluating the use of these bio-alcohols as feedstocks for the commercial-scale production of bio-based acrylic resins with a reduced carbon footprint. These materials will serve high-performance markets, including coatings, adhesives for new energy solutions, e-mobility, living comfort, and sustainable infrastructure.
“This partnership is fully aligned with Arkema’s strategy and ambition to deliver ever more sustainable solutions to our customers,” said Richard Jenkins, senior vice president, Arkema Coating Solutions. “By working with Catalyxx, we strengthen our ability to reduce the carbon footprint of our materials and meet the growing demands of environmental regulations and green building certifications.”
“This project is a major milestone for Catalyxx, and we value the trust and shared vision we’ve built with Arkema over the past few years,” said Joaquin Alarcón, founder and CEO of Catalyxx. “This new step reinforces our common interest in advancing sustainable materials and supports the continued development of our first commercial plant.”
The initiative represents a significant advancement in replacing fossil-based raw materials with renewable alternatives while maintaining the performance required for demanding industrial applications.
