Evonik Coating Additives announced that more than 95% of its active siloxane-based coating and ink additives portfolio contains less than 0.1% of relevant substances of very high concern (SVHCs).

According to the company, extensive analytical testing confirmed the low SVHC levels across its active siloxane-based Coating Additives portfolio. Evonik said the results maintain the portfolio’s suitability for use in paints and inks with Ecolabel certification.

The update comes as recent European Union regulatory developments have affected certain low-molecular-weight siloxanes. According to Evonik, some linear and cyclic siloxanes have been classified as SVHCs because they meet REACH criteria for persistence and bioaccumulation. New EU hazard classes for persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) and very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vPvB) substances require products to be classified and labeled when these substances are present at concentrations of 0.1% or higher.

Evonik said the concentration of these siloxanes, which can occur as impurities in siloxane materials, can be reduced through raw material selection and optimized manufacturing processes. The company said its approach allows customers to continue using siloxane-based TEGO® grades without reformulation or switching to higher-cost purified alternatives.
