Kansai Paint, Toyoda Gosei Develop In-Mold Coating for Large Automotive Parts

Kansai Paint Co. Ltd. and Toyoda Gosei Co. Ltd. have jointly developed an in-mold coating technology for large plastic automotive exterior parts.
The companies said the technology enables parts to be formed and painted inside the mold. While in-mold coating has been used for smaller products, the companies said this is the first technology in Japan designed for mass production of large exterior parts.
The development combines Toyoda Gosei’s mold technology for large components with Kansai Paint’s coating-material design technology. The process is designed to create a smooth, seamless appearance while improving durability.
Because the coating is applied and cured within the mold, a separate drying furnace is not required. The companies said the approach can reduce production-related carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 60%.
Large components using the technology are scheduled for market launch in spring 2026.
