Excimer coatings are cured using specialized excited-dimer UV light, which creates an ultra-matte surface with a soft, skin-like texture. PPG offers the technology in waterborne and solventborne formulations for metal and plastic components.

Potential applications include notebook computers, keyboards, mobile phones, wearable electronics and smart-home devices. PPG said the coatings cure significantly faster than conventional technologies, giving manufacturers additional flexibility across production and application processes.

The coatings are also designed to resist fingerprints, smudges, scratches, abrasion, wear and yellowing. According to PPG, the technology has been qualified by leading consumer-electronics manufacturers.

PPG said its UV- and electron-beam-curable coating technologies can cure in seconds while using significantly less energy than conventional thermal-curing processes.
