Mediterranean Shipping Company and Jotun have entered into an agreement covering the installation and operation of Jotun’s Hull Skating Solutions aboard the MSC Daniela.
The system combines Jotun’s SeaQuantum Skate antifouling coating with robotic hull inspection and cleaning technology designed to maintain a clean hull during vessel operation. The installation was completed while the vessel was drydocked in China in June 2026.
Jotun said the integrated approach is intended to support vessel efficiency by limiting the buildup of biofouling, which can increase hydrodynamic resistance and fuel consumption. Maintaining a cleaner hull can also help reduce the movement of marine organisms between ports.
Hull Skating Solutions uses proactive robotic inspection and cleaning in conjunction with the antifouling coating rather than relying solely on periodic reactive hull cleaning. Jotun said the system recently received independent verification from DNV for maintaining what the company describes as an “always clean hull,” with no measurable speed loss.
The agreement expands an existing relationship between MSC and Jotun and reflects increased interest in combining coating performance, inspection technology and automated maintenance to manage hull condition throughout a vessel’s operating cycle.
