Functional Coating Combines Corrosion Protection With Passive Cooling

Need to Know
- The coating combines passive radiative cooling with corrosion and weathering protection for industrial metal.
- The high-solids silane-polymer system is intended for applications including roofs, storage tanks and outdoor equipment.
- Company-reported testing includes C5 high-durability corrosion performance and at least 1,440 hours of salt-spray resistance.
i2Cool has introduced i2Coating CorroCool, a functional coating designed to provide passive radiative cooling and corrosion protection on industrial metal surfaces.
Developed with technical support from Kinte Materials Science and Technology Co., the coating combines passive radiative cooling materials with a high-solids silane-polymer system. Target applications include metal roofs, petrochemical storage tanks, telecommunications cabinets, outdoor electrical equipment and other metal infrastructure exposed to sunlight and corrosive environments.
The coating uses a silane polymer as its primary film-forming material. According to the company, silane chemistry promotes bonding with the metal substrate while formation of a dense polymer network creates a barrier against moisture and corrosive substances. Nano-functional materials provide the thermal-management component. The recommended total dry-film thickness is 200-250 µm.
Company-reported testing includes C5 high-durability corrosion protection in accordance with relevant ISO 12944-6 requirements, at least 1,440 hours of salt-spray resistance, adhesion above 10 MPa and 1,500 hours of xenon-arc weathering. The company also reports solar reflectance of at least 92% and atmospheric-window emittance of at least 95%.
The coating uses an integrated primer-and-topcoat design intended to reduce the need for separate anticorrosion and thermal-control coating systems. i2Cool said potential applications also include coastal infrastructure, power facilities, industrial pipelines and outdoor manufacturing equipment.
