The Association for Materials Protection and Performance is supporting the bipartisan advancement of the Water Resources Development Act of 2026, linking the legislation's infrastructure provisions to long-term corrosion protection and asset performance.
The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved H.R. 9497 unanimously July 14. The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee advanced S. 4949 the following day, and the Senate measure was placed on the legislative calendar. The separate versions would need to advance through Congress and ultimately be reconciled before enactment.
The legislation addresses ports, inland waterways, flood protection, drinking water, wastewater systems and other water-resource projects.
AMPP said the legislation highlights that resilient infrastructure depends not only on new construction, but also on long-term protection, maintenance and performance. The association pointed to protective coatings, corrosion control, inspections, material selection and asset-integrity management as technologies and practices that can help extend infrastructure service life.
"The bipartisan support for WRDA 2026 shows that more people understand resilient infrastructure needs long-term planning and steady investment," said Ernst Toussaint, vice president of civil infrastructure at AMPP.
"Every bridge, lock, dam, levee, water treatment plant, and navigation structure included in this bill will depend on effective corrosion prevention, protective coatings, inspections, and materials engineering to achieve its intended design life, improve resilience, and reduce long-term maintenance costs," he said.
AMPP said it will continue working with policymakers, agencies and industry partners as the legislation moves through Congress.
