Ultra-High-Shear Inline Mixer Targets Rapid Particle-Size Reduction

Charles Ross & Son Co. is offering the MegaShear Model HSM-706MS-50 inline mixer for applications requiring rapid particle-size reduction, emulsification and homogenization.
The patented rotor-stator generator operates at speeds of up to 7,200 rpm and delivers tip speeds of approximately 57.4 m/s (11,300 ft/min). Ross said the high-intensity mixing action is designed to support efficient dispersion and consistent finished-product properties.
The mixer is powered by a 37-kW (50-hp) explosion-proof, inverter-duty motor that provides variable-speed control. The equipment is designed to process liquids and semi-viscous materials in specialty chemical, pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic applications.
Product-contact surfaces are constructed from Type 316 stainless steel and polished to a 150-grit finish. The mixing chamber is rated for operation at pressures up to 1.03 MPa (150 psig) and temperatures up to 121 °C (250 °F).
A stainless-steel jacket provides temperature control, while tri-clamp inlet and outlet connections are intended to simplify integration into existing process lines.
The mixer also includes a bearing housing with integrated cooling coils and a forced-oil lubrication system with a pump, filter and monitoring instrumentation. It is mounted on a heavy-duty stainless-steel base with sanitary caster wheels for positioning and cleaning.
Ross identifies inks, paints and coatings among the industries served by its mixing equipment. The particle-size reduction and dispersion capabilities may be useful in coatings manufacturing processes involving pigments, additives and other dispersed components.
