Need to Know

  • A new Cost2Coat UV calculator helps manufacturers assess costs, potential savings and payback.
  • Educational and technical resources are rolling out across Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific.
  • Customers can test coating systems and simulate production conditions through AkzoNobel technical application centers.

AkzoNobel Wood Coatings is expanding the resources available to furniture, cabinetry, flooring and building product manufacturers considering UV and UV LED curing technologies.

The initiative includes a new Cost2Coat UV calculator intended to help customers quantify potential cost, energy and productivity benefits based on their individual production-line configurations. The tool compares factors including upfront investment, operating savings and potential payback.

Educational materials include a UV curing question-and-answer guide, a video explaining how the technology works, a dedicated website hub and ongoing technical content from AkzoNobel specialists. The resources are being introduced across Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific.

Customers also have access to AkzoNobel technical application centers, where coating systems can be tested under simulated production conditions. Technical service and R&D teams can assist with coating selection, process optimization and line setup. AkzoNobel is also working with equipment and lamp suppliers to evaluate compatibility across different curing technologies.

According to the company, UV LED systems can reduce energy consumption by approximately 50%–70% in some applications compared with conventional curing technologies, although actual savings depend on the coating system, equipment and line configuration.

Because UV coatings cure almost immediately, finished components can be handled or stacked soon after application. That can reduce drying time and work-in-process inventory while supporting higher line speeds. AkzoNobel said suitable systems can also maintain stain and scratch resistance across applications including furniture, cabinets, flooring and building products.

The initiative is part of the company’s wider “It All Adds Up” program, which focuses on operational changes that can produce measurable efficiency and environmental improvements.

Explore AkzoNobel’s UV and UV LED curing resource center.

The calculator and testing resources give manufacturers evaluating UV coatings a more practical way to compare curing technologies against existing wood-finishing processes.
