Nippon Paint Indonesia Uses Color to Improve Nursing Home Safety
Nippon Paint Indonesia completed an environmental revitalization project at Marfati Nursing Home in Tangerang, Banten, through its Colouring Lives community program.
The project used contrasting colors and visual markers to make higher-risk areas easier for elderly residents to identify. Work focused on stairways, toilets, activity paths, wheelchair routes, evacuation areas and other shared facilities where visibility and orientation are especially important.
Nippon Paint donated 180 liters of paint and selected products based on the functional requirements of each location. Epoxyguard was used on floor areas requiring durability, Weatherbond Max was selected for exterior weather protection, Easywash was used in shared interior spaces and NeonGlo glow paint was applied where enhanced low-light visibility was needed.
Colors and coating types were assigned specific functions, including identifying hazardous areas, marking wheelchair paths and highlighting toilets, evacuation routes and safety points.
The project was designed to demonstrate how paint can contribute beyond appearance by improving visibility, wayfinding, cleanability and confidence during daily movement. The chairperson of the Marfati Nursing Home Foundation reported that the contrasting colors had helped residents feel more secure when walking independently, particularly around stairs and restrooms.
The initiative also included “Saturday With Grandma and Grandpa,” an interactive program involving creative activities, social interaction and safety education for residents.
The project demonstrates how color and special purpose coatings can support wayfinding, durability, hygiene and visibility in institutional environments.
