Water-Based Wood Finish Combines Stain and Topcoat

Minwax has introduced One Step Stain & Topcoat, a water-based wood finish that combines stain color and protective coating in a single product.
The finish applies by brush without the wiping step associated with many traditional stains. It is intended for furniture, cabinetry, home décor and other interior wood applications on both bare and previously finished surfaces.
Minwax specifies a two-hour drying period between coats. Previously finished wood requires light sanding before application and a second coat, according to the company's application instructions.
The product is available in more than 240 tintable colors in satin and semi-gloss sheens. Five prepackaged colors are also available: Pickled Oak, Special Walnut, Dark Walnut, Charcoal Gray and True Black.
The water-based formulation allows soap-and-water cleanup. Minwax says the combined application can reduce project time compared with applying its water-based stain and Polycrylic protective finish separately.
