Ceramic-Forming Silicone Coating Targets Battery Thermal Runaway

WACKER is showcasing a sprayable silicone coating designed to protect battery components during thermal runaway events.
ELASTOSIL CM 146 US A/B is a two-component, room-temperature-curing silicone material intended for flexible barrier systems in batteries and electronic devices. After curing, the coating remains deformable during normal use but undergoes ceramification when exposed to temperatures above 600 °C, forming a hard insulating shield.
The coating is designed to provide thermal insulation that can help protect surrounding battery components during extreme-temperature events. WACKER also lists low volatile content, no oil bleeding and room-temperature curing among its processing characteristics. The material can be applied by spraying and is designed for battery housings as well as automotive and electronics applications.
WACKER is featuring the coating at The Battery Show North America in Detroit alongside materials for battery potting, thermal management and assembly.
The company's battery portfolio at the event also includes thermally conductive silicone potting compounds and adhesives intended for evolving module-to-pack and cell-to-pack battery architectures.
Thermal-barrier coatings are becoming an important functional-coatings application as battery manufacturers work to limit heat transfer and thermal-runaway propagation while maintaining manufacturing flexibility.
