Coatings Earnings Show Different Paths to Sales Growth

Third-quarter results from Sherwin-Williams, Axalta and Eastman show that sales growth across the coatings supply chain did not translate into uniform improvements in demand or profitability.
Sherwin-Williams: Performance Coatings Sales Increase
Sherwin-Williams reported consolidated sales of $6.86 billion, up 7.9%.
Its Performance Coatings Group recorded sales of approximately $1.90 billion, an 8.8% increase. Adjusted segment profit increased 4.7% to $308.7 million, while adjusted segment margin declined to 16.2% from 16.9%.
The company reported mid-single-digit pricing growth and low-single-digit volume growth in the segment. General industrial, packaging and coil coatings delivered double-digit sales growth, while industrial wood and automotive refinish posted low-single-digit increases.
Axalta: Mobility Gains, Refinish Softens
Axalta reported approximately $1.3 billion in net sales, up 2%, while adjusted EBITDA declined 4% to $282 million.
Mobility Coatings sales increased 7% to $493 million, including a 24% increase in commercial vehicle sales.
Performance Coatings sales were $818 million, down $10 million. Refinish sales declined 2% to $504 million, with European volume pressure contributing to the result. Industrial sales increased 1% to $314 million.
Performance Coatings adjusted EBITDA declined to $188 million from $211 million, and adjusted EBITDA margin fell to 23% from 25.5%.
Eastman: Additives Growth Led by Pricing
Eastman reported sales of $2.385 billion, up 8%. Higher selling prices contributed seven percentage points, while volume and product mix contributed one.
Additives & Functional Products sales increased 9%, reflecting 10% higher selling prices partly offset by a 1% decline in volume and product mix.
Eastman attributed pricing actions to higher raw-material and distribution costs. The company continued to describe underlying demand in markets including automotive and consumer durables as soft, reinforcing the distinction between revenue growth and a broad volume recovery. Eastman
