Portable High-Shear Mixer Supports Pilot-Scale Processing

Charles Ross & Son Co. is highlighting a portable high-shear mixing system designed for high-intensity mixing, emulsification and homogenization of liquids and slurries used in coatings and other formulated products.
The ROSS Model HSM-105 is mounted on a portable vessel with a 45-gallon working capacity and uses a 5-hp explosion-proof motor.
Its four-blade, 3.5-in.-diameter rotor operates at speeds up to 3,600 rpm inside a close-tolerance slotted stator. The rotor-stator assembly generates intense hydraulic shear as material is expelled into the surrounding mixture.
The dished-bottom vessel includes a flush 2-in. ball valve to support product discharge and cleaning.
A hinged loading section, lifting lugs and clamps are incorporated into the vessel cover. A thermowell in the vessel sidewall supports batch temperature monitoring.
The vessel is mounted on stainless steel legs with casters and includes a handle for movement around the production floor.
The NEMA 12 control panel includes a 5-hp variable frequency drive and a 4-in. color touchscreen. Operators can control speed and start/stop functions while monitoring load, temperature and cycle time.
Safety provisions include an emergency stop, lockable main disconnect, motor fuse protection and a safety circuit connection.
Available customizations include heating and cooling jackets, vacuum or pressure-rated designs, polished wetted surfaces, specialized valves and ports and washdown motors.
The company's batch high-shear mixers can also be configured as vessel-mounted systems or stand-alone units on mobile lifts for use with multiple vessels.
