Balzers, a supplier of physical vapor deposition (PVD) coatings headquartered in Liechtenstein, has acquired the PVD coating operations of Gold Star Coatings, a subsidiary of the industrial tooling group Star Cutter Co. The transaction was expected to be concluded on April 30, 2006. Balzers will assume the function of coating partner for the tool re-sharpening service centers operated by Star and SU, and sold through Star SU in the US, Canada and Mexico. In addition, Balzers will also open an in-house coating center in the gear tool manufacturing operation of Star Cutter Company in East Tawas, Mich. The existing coating center of Gold Star Coatings in Richmond, Ind., will be expanded to become a significant regional site for Balzers, and the activities of Gold Star's West Branch, Mich., facility will be integrated into three existing Balzers' coating centers in Michigan.

In a separate venture, Balzers has opened of a new 16,000-sq-ft coating center in Houston, Texas. The Houston center will service the South Central region, which includes Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. The facility will provide full-service coating solutions for high-performance coatings and pre- and post-treatment capabilities.
