This article highlights pertinent current and future issues shaping the coatings industry.

 Smart coatings are an area of development and commercialization that promises to change the expectations of what can be accomplished with coatings. 

 A family of new radiation-curable additives with an improved compatibility in various formulations (solvent-free, solvent and waterborne) and covering a broad slip range has been developed. 

The Dow Chemical Company anticipates US EPA registration of a new active ingredient N-methyl-1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one (MBIT in 2014.)

Part one of this article discusses the theory of optimizing applied hiding and new techniques used to characterize applied paint films to determine the influence of rheology on application.

 This study examined alternative routes for the production of butanol and propylene glycol. 

 Two new additives have been developed with patented applications for improving performance in solvent free, coatings. 

 A method to improve the hiding power of latex coatings by using a phosphate ester-based reactive surfactant and, thereby, reduce TiO2 usage is also discussed. 

 The carbon dioxide-based hardcoats developed in this project offer a unique balance of properties that make them viable alternatives to existing hardcoat technologies, in particular for substances such as thermoplastic polycarbonate. 

Traditional two-pack PUR technology combined with surface-modified nanosilica particles results in increased scratch and abrasion resistance in transparent, high-gloss coatings for plastics.
