Water-based liquid-applied waterproofing membranes are traditionally thickened with cellulosics (HEC) and associative thickeners (HEUR, HASE) and often synthetic fibers are added for strength. The use of these thickeners can often lead to challenges with both water resistance and absorption of the coating. In addition, the control of syneresis and sagging is often challenging.
 
Exilva micro-fibrillated cellulose (MFC), is a bio-based, sustainable and multi-functional alternative to traditional thickeners and synthetic fibers. The 3-D network consists of highly entangled fibrils with lateral dimensions in the nanoscale and lengths in the micron scale. These strong fibrils provide mechanical properties for the final coating as well as reduce the water absorption of the coating significantly. Exilva’s unique rheological properties allow for increased stability as well as an easier application of the paint. The superior mud crack resistance allows applying thick layers without any fear of cracking.
