Incorporation of Reactive and Non-Reactive Fluoro-Silicones into Various Coatings Films and the Resulting Properties

Now On Demand A series of our non-PFOS fluoroalkyl silicones are presented in various coatings films for their impact on coatings properties such as slip, COF, flow and leveling, and mar, stain, and fingerprint and chemical resistance.
Our experimental design used five coatings systems: a solvent borne urethane, two UV cured acrylates, a UV cured, epoxy silicone resin and post-addition to a commercial paint.
The various fluoro-silicone products are all based on C4F9 chemistry, not-PFOS. Some of those evaluated are designed to be more highly compatible with the coatings systems by incorporation of additional organic groups and others are made reactive with the coatings systems using either a primary hydroxyl or an acrylate ester.
Possible uses of these materials include stain release, anti-graffiti, anti-fingerprint, marine, release, and other specialty coatings.

Speakers:
Tom Cheung
Tom Cheung received his Ph.D. in Chemistry at University of Western Ontario. He joined University of Toronto as a research postdoctoral fellow and as a lecturer, giving a course on “Polymers for Engineering Applications” for several years. Afterward, Tom worked in R&D in various chemical industries for 30 years. His experiences include applications of silicone materials in coating, adhesive, sealant and plastics/elastomers industries covering a wide range of crosslinking chemistries. He is currently employed as Application Lab Manager at Siltech.
Bob Ruckle
Bob Ruckle attained his Ph.D. at University of Delaware, joining Union Carbide’s Silicone business in 1989 as a Research Chemist. Over the next 25 years Bob worked in R&D designing silicone surfactants primarily for the coatings additives market and marketing of silicone products. In 2009, Bob joined Siltech in a sales and marketing role and is now the Global Marketing and Sales Manager.
Steve Wilkowski
Steve Wilkowski has worked within the Material Science Industry for over 25 years in a variety of research, development and commercial roles at Siltech Corporation, Dow Corning and Evonik Industries. He has recently been involved in projects related to sales development, global strategic marketing and front-end portfolio management. Steve has developed intellectual property and published numerous papers and articles related to the use of silicone materials for a wide variety of applications and industries. He has written articles on the synthesis and applications of silicone surfactants, asymmetrically substituted polysiloxanes and silane antimicrobials. Steve holds degrees in Chemistry and Biology from Saginaw Valley State University and an MBA from Virginia Commonwealth University. He has also completed executive education at The University of Chicago School of Business and The University of Chicago Medical Center. With a passion for Nature Conservation, Steve actively works with local and national organizations such as Little Forks Conservancy and Trout Unlimited. He resides with his wife and three children in Midland, Michigan.
Rick Vrckovnik
A 1986 graduate of the University of Toronto in Chemistry, Rick Vrckovnik has worked for several years in R&D at Alkaril Chemicals Ltd., mostly in the surfactant synthesis field. He is the author or co-author of several patents issued to Siltech Corp. He is presently heading the R&D activities at Siltech and has been doing so since 1994.
