PFAS-Free Surface Tech Expands Through Acquisition

Kuraray Co. Ltd. announced its acquisition of Nelumbo Inc., a California-based materials technology company specializing in surface modification for substrates such as polymers and fibers. The deal was executed through Kuraray’s U.S. subsidiary, Kuraray Holdings U.S.A. Inc. Terms were not disclosed.
Founded in 2016, Nelumbo originated from the University of California, Berkeley and has developed surface technologies that enhance properties such as water repellency without using PFAS or other increasingly regulated substances.
Kuraray previously entered into an exclusive partnership with Nelumbo in 2023 and determined the company’s technology offers significant potential to enhance product functionality across a wide range of applications.
This acquisition aligns with Kuraray’s medium-term management strategy, PASSION 2026, which focuses on business innovation through collaborative networks. The integration of Nelumbo’s technology is expected to strengthen Kuraray’s core polymer and synthetic chemistry platforms.
The transaction is not expected to materially affect Kuraray’s financial performance.
