Regulatory pressure shaping shipping coatings adoption
AkzoNobel announced that its International marine coatings brand has signed an expanded strategic agreement with Winning Shipping in China aimed at supporting lower-carbon shipping operations.
The companies have partnered since 2016. Under the expanded collaboration, AkzoNobel will supply International coatings for several drydocking projects scheduled for 2026. The agreement focuses on six vessels and is intended to enhance fleet operational efficiency and environmental performance.
Central to the agreement is Intersleek 1100SR, a biocide-free fouling control coating featuring slime-release technology designed to reduce hull resistance and improve fuel efficiency. International will also supply Intercept 8500 LPP, an antifouling coating developed for deep sea vessels.
“The outstanding performance of International has been fully validated in our existing fleet, delivering significant fuel savings and enhancing our market competitiveness,” said Yu Shan, general manager of Qingdao Winning International Ship Management Co. Ltd. “This is why we’ve chosen to extend and deepen our partnership.”
The agreement comes as shipping companies respond to tightening emissions regulations and increased focus on energy efficiency. China is advancing implementation of its “Dual Carbon” strategy within the maritime sector, encouraging adoption of more sustainable technologies.
“We’re honored to continue and deepen our strategic cooperation,” said Rob Leslie, commercial director of AkzoNobel Marine and Protective Coatings in Greater China. “We look forward to providing solid support for the long-term operational efficiency and sustainable development goals of its fleet.”
The agreement was signed during the Marintec China 2025 exhibition.
Marine coatings technologies continue to play a role in emissions reduction strategies across Marine Coatings and global shipping operations.
