Hempel Secures Three-Year Maersk Hull-Coatings Agreement
Hempel has signed a three-year global hull-coatings agreement with A.P. Moller-Maersk covering a substantial share of Maersk’s 2026-2028 dry-docking program. The agreement was announced Sept. 14.
The companies have worked together for more than a decade. Hempel said the new agreement builds on documented in-service performance of its Hempaguard silicone hull-coating technology, including fouling defense, long-term hull protection and fuel-efficiency benefits. Hempel and Maersk will also work jointly on dry-docking performance and optimization of coatings while vessels are in service.
Hempel says Hempaguard has now been applied more than 6,000 times since its 2013 launch. Using a DNV-validated methodology, the company estimates those applications have helped customers avoid approximately 43.4 million metric tons of CO₂ compared with conventional coating benchmarks, although actual savings vary with vessel and operating conditions.
This is a significant commercial validation of silicone foul-release technology by one of the world's largest shipping companies. It connects coatings performance directly with fuel consumption, operating costs and maritime decarbonization.
