Elementis Targets Post-Tint Viscosity Loss With Three-Product Portfolio
Elementis introduced three CVS additives designed to reduce post-tint viscosity loss and improve rheology in waterborne architectural coatings.

Elementis has introduced its Colour Viscosity Stability, or CVS, Additives portfolio for reducing viscosity loss after tinting waterborne architectural coatings.
The portfolio includes DAPRO CVS 20, RHEOLATE CVS 16 and RHEOLATE CVS 15 EU. The products provide colorant- and base-paint-side approaches intended to maintain more predictable rheology across a range of colors and tint strengths.
Universal colorants can introduce surfactants that interfere with the associative networks responsible for viscosity development, particularly in systems using NiSAT technology. According to Elementis, the resulting loss of Krebs Units can affect sag resistance, hiding power and other application properties while increasing the amount of rheology modifier required.
DAPRO CVS 20 uses a functionalized encapsulation technology designed to isolate surfactants during tinting. Elementis reports that the additive reduced viscosity loss from 28 KU to 3 KU in testing while maintaining leveling and color vibrancy. It is intended for universal colorant producers and decorative paint manufacturers that produce their own colorants.
RHEOLATE CVS 16 is an associative thickener designed for use in the base paint. The company reports that it can improve viscosity retention after tinting by up to 45%, while providing KU build, color acceptance and efficiency across multiple resin systems and base types. RHEOLATE CVS 15 EU is the first-generation product in the portfolio.
“These additives provide formulators with highly reliable solutions that deliver predictable rheology, improved performance in use and enhanced formulation efficiency, all without compromising color acceptance or aesthetic quality,” said Gerjan van Laar, head of segment management at Elementis.
