Wanhua Restarts European MDI and TDI Units After Planned Maintenance
Wanhua Chemical Group said its BorsodChem subsidiary in Hungary has completed scheduled maintenance on its integrated MDI, TDI and supporting facilities and returned the units to normal production.
The complex includes annual production capacity of 400,000 metric tons of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate and 250,000 metric tons of toluene diisocyanate. The units began shutting down in stages July 17.
The restart follows PCI’s July report that Wanhua planned an approximately 35-day turnaround across the same 650,000 metric tons of combined annual isocyanate capacity. The company described that shutdown as scheduled annual maintenance intended to support safe and stable operation of the equipment.
MDI and TDI are important intermediates for polyurethane materials used across coatings, adhesives, sealants, elastomers and other industrial applications. Operating changes at a complex of this size can therefore affect downstream supply planning across several CASE markets.
Wanhua’s restart filing does not quantify the maintenance period’s effect on inventories, customer deliveries or European pricing. The action returns existing capacity to service and should not be described as a capacity expansion.
The restart is relevant to coatings manufacturers tracking paint and coating resins and polymers, particularly polyurethane raw-material availability in Europe.
