Finishes Unlimited, based in Sugar Grove, IL, was recently presented with an Illinois Governor's 2006 Pollution Prevention Award for success in reducing pollution and supporting the state's economy. The award was presented during ceremonies held on October 25 in Bloomington, IL. Finishes Unlimited, which produces waterborne industrial coatings, was one of nine companies and organizations receiving the Governor's Award. Hank Godshalk, the company's chairman of the board and its president, Ken Burton accepted the award for the company during a luncheon hosted by the Waste Management and Research Center (WMRC), a division of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), which conducts the award program.

In commenting, Ken Burton, president of Finishes Unlimited said, "We consider supplying water reducible, EPA compliant coatings a pollution prevention activity because it allows our customers to significantly lower their VOC and HAP emissions and the amount of hazardous waste generated from the coating operation. By manufacturing only water reducible coatings, our Sugar Grove plant is inherently safer than plants that manufacture solvent borne coatings and creates a much better working environment for our employees."

Burton noted that in 2005 alone, the company converted three Illinois companies to water reducible, VOC-complaint coatings. These companies reduced their combined VOC emissions by 70% or 27.87 tons and HAP emissions by 100% or 9.7 tons. These companies also realized paint and disposal cost savings of more than $200,000 per year.
