Evonik Upgrades Shanghai UV Coating Platform for Label and Liner Applications

Evonik has upgraded its UV-curable coating equipment at the Evonik Shanghai Innovation Park with a five-roll coating platform designed for label and release-liner applications.
The company said the upgraded system replaces a three-roll coater and allows laboratory work to more closely simulate modern industrial production conditions. The platform is intended to support formulation testing, process optimization and scale-up from early development through commercial production validation.
Evonik said the five-roll configuration provides greater flexibility for customer-specific projects and can more closely reflect coating-line configurations used by label and release-liner manufacturers.
The platform also includes a UV/LED inert-curing unit that allows users to switch between UV and LED curing modes. Evonik said the added capability supports the industry’s growing use of LED-curing technologies, which can reduce energy demand and improve operating efficiency compared with conventional systems.
Jared Bender, head of Product Line Agriculture & Specialties at Evonik Interface & Polyurethane Additives, said the investment is intended to strengthen support for customer projects from feasibility studies through production validation.
The Shanghai facility is part of Evonik’s global release-coatings innovation network, which also includes pilot lines and laboratory facilities in Essen, Germany, and Richmond, Virginia. The company has developed UV-curable release-coating technologies for more than four decades, including its TEGO® RC silicone portfolio.
