Evonik Automates Life Cycle Assessments

Evonik announced a TÜV-certified software solution that automates life cycle assessments, enabling consistent, rapid calculations of environmental indicators for its products. The company said automated LCAs are about ten times faster than the previous manual approach, allowing an assessment to be provided in days. Automated LCAs are available for more than 1,000 products, with a group-wide rollout across all business lines planned by 2027.
The system calculates all relevant environmental impacts, including carbon footprint, water usage and nutrient discharges into water bodies. Data is sourced from central company databases and external providers. The solution is based on software from Sphera Solutions.
“Our customers don’t just want to know how sustainable a product is today — they want to see how it can improve tomorrow,” said Florian Böss, head of life cycle management at Evonik. TÜV Rheinland confirmed the functionality and accuracy of the automated process in July 2025, building on a well-established manual process that has now been digitized.
Evonik said automated LCAs support customer communication and internal decision-making on raw materials and energy and help evaluate CO₂ reduction measures. As part of its sustainability strategy, the company has committed to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 25% by 2030.
